As part of the rollout of the NHS Direct Booking (DAB) solution, the Urgent Care Team have been undertaking an Equalities and Health Inequalities Assessment (EHIA) around its potential impact on the CHMS patient population.

The EHIA has uncovered a trend amongst some of those groups within the patient population with protected characteristic groups (e.g. disability, (Mental health, learning disabilities, Autism, deafness), transgender and race groups) that they prefer not to contact health services via the phone. As I am sure you are aware DAB relies on people contacting NHS111 to get a booked appointment with a range of services that can best their health need, Improved Access, UTCs/MIUs or other more relevant services.  With NHS111 being available online, the EHIA research has found that this would be the preferred route for these groups.

The national winter messaging campaign is now live and it is promoting NHS111 as the way into managing an urgent health need.  This will better manage patient flow and direct people away from A&E departments to more appropriate settings, including Pharmacy.
